OPINION: Is MOM genuinely oblivious to increasing number of foreigners on social visit pass working as temporary lion dance helpers during CNY?

The Real Singapore, 31 Jan 2014
Chinese New year is at the corner and Lion dance is very common everywhere, especially this year with the movie 'The Lion man'. But do you realise most of the lion dancer during CNY are Foreigners? For your info. although SG is very small, but our CNY lion dance market is actually the biggest in south east asia. Every year, 'helpers' from various country like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, China, Taiwan and Hongkong will come into Singapore with social visit pass to earn a living during CNY, earning our 'Strong' currency.
For such 'helpers', they are usually paid $40 per day(excluding ang pow), food and stay are covered by our local team. For example this yr, there are at least 120 Vietnamese and 60 Thai 'helpers' in SG. They usually are from schools that are sponsored by Singaporeans back in their country to source manpower. OPINION: Singapore’s education system: The truth behind the myth - Jess C. Scott

The Malaysian Insider, 31 Jan 2014
When I was growing up in Singapore – I migrated to the US when I was twenty – what caused me a lot of grief was the education system.
I don’t have a vendetta against the schools I attended. Some teachers really cared about students, in a way which went beyond how the students were performing academically.
It is the education system itself which I don’t remember fondly.
I always feel disheartened with reports in the establishment media that paint a rosy picture of Singapore’s education system (like here, here, and here). Few of them give a comprehensive overview of the real effects of the system.
Such reports do not dilute the clear memory I have – through direct experience – of the disadvantages of the aforementioned system. Full story

OPINION: Spoiling the festive air in Hougang on Chinese New Year eve

Singapore Notes, 31 Jan 2014
According to Hong Kong feng shui master Alion Yeo, the Year of the Horse starting today is going to be the kind of horse that you shouldn't stand behind - because it incorporates the volatile element of fire: "With this being the Year of the Wood Horse, and with wood being very combustible, there will be a lot of scandals, conflicts, explosions and arguments."
But conflicts, disasters, record high temperatures, an economic chill in Asia and more trouble for celebrity bad boy Justin Biebe pale in comparison when gutter politician Vivian Balakrishnan unleashed his NEA dogs to spoil the festive air on Chinese New Year eve.
The goon squad from the National Environment Agency (NEA) raided a floral fair at the Hougang Central Hub where last minute shoppers were hunting down flowers like the pussy willow to decorate their homes for an auspicious start of the Lunar New Year. Their quarrel was obviously with the opposition party organising the event, but ordinary residents were not spared the collateral damage. Together with the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC), stall holders were also summoned to appear in court on Feb 18, for manning stalls from Jan 9 to 30, without a licence. OPINION: Will Health Minister Gan Kim Yong reveal the population size target he uses to decide on adding 10,000 more hospital beds in 2020

Facebook/TanJeeSay, 27 Jan 2014
Minister Gan must tell us what is the population size that he has used for the year 2020 when deciding to build 10,000 more beds by 2020. Is this population figure in line with the Population White Paper approved by Parliament in early 2013? What would be the expected number of beds per 10,000 population when the additional 10,000 beds are put in place by end 2020?
Let us work out the numbers in case the minister is not promptly forthcoming…………. The number of beds per 10,000 population will then be 36 which is not even two thirds of First World norm.
Does this mean that Singaporeans will continue to see their loved ones lying on beds in hospital corridors and make-shift tents in the years ahead? We can avoid this Third World situation either by increasing the number of beds sharply to around 35,000 beds by 2020 or reducing the total population appropriately, or doing both at a slower pace or in ways that do not degrade the quality of public service. That is why it is vitally important for Singaporeans to oppose the Population White Paper unless adequate public facilities in essential services are put in place. And all the working numbers …. must clearly be shown to the people. That’s what we expect of a responsible and transparent government.” Full story

PM Lee Hsien Loong hits back at Singapore social media for "pack behaviour" towards Anton Casey

Internet rules are necessary to restrain "pack behaviour" in social media and ensure civility between users, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in remarks released Wednesday.
Speaking at a university forum late Tuesday, Lee said social media raised the risk of an overreaction from the public when contentious incidents occur in the ethnically diverse city-state, with "unrestrained, anonymous viciousness".
Lee, who has nearly 260,000 Facebook followers, referred to several local incidents that have sparked off unbridled web outrage, including derogatory comments against Singaporeans posted on social media by British expatriate Anton Casey last week. Full story

PM Lee warned Singaporeans against having "lynch mob mentality" on foreign talents like Anton Casey and Amy Cheong

The Malay Mail Online, 29 Jan 2013
SINGAPORE, Jan 29 — Citing the recent episode involving Briton Anton Casey, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday cautioned Singaporeans against having a lynch mob mentality, as he noted how social media has complicated society’s fault lines.
Mr Lee also mentioned the incidents where former National Trades Union Congress employee Amy Cheong and a fictitious Facebook character “Heather Chua” were condemned by Singaporeans online for posting racist comments.
“Yes, somebody has done something wrong, repudiate it, condemn it, but do not lower ourselves to that same level to behave in a way which really makes us all so ashamed of ourselves to become abusive, hateful mobs, especially online and anonymously,” said Mr Lee.
“You scold, you swear, you curse — all the wrong instincts get fed and in a group, there are certain group dynamics and it is like a pack of hounds hunting, which is bad,” Mr Lee said.
“We risk having an over-reaction, we risk having unrestrained, anonymous viciousness on the Internet,” he added..... Full story

OPINION: Voters don't count, Lim Swee Say still wants to keep collecting his million dollars cheques

Singapore Notes, 28 Jan 2014
Trust Lim Swee Say to announce that he will be contesting in the East Coast GRC at the next general election, supposedly to implement plans he has for the ageing contituency. Only in Singapore, can an ageing politician simply declare he plans to be minister again, regardless of the wishes of the electorate.
Lim must be addicted to the high he gets each time he looks at his Central Provident Fund (CPF) account balance. "Some more, it's guaranteed," he gleefully told his audience. He may have to step down as union chief when he turns 62 in July 2016 - pursuant to a National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) constitutional change made in 2011 - but he still wants to keep collecting those million dollar cheques. You would expect an outgoing chief to endorse at least one of the 4 successors in waiting, but the selfish sycophant (synonyms: toady, creep, crawler, fawner, flatterer, flunkey, lickspittle, kowtower, obsequious person, minion, hanger-on, leech, puppet) would not volunteer a single word of support for Zainal Sapari (48), Patrick Tay (42), Ang Hin Kee (48) or Yeo Guat Kwang (52).   Full story

OPINION: U.S. Fed Holds the Fuse to Singapore’s Bubble Time Bomb

Financialsense.com, 24 Jan 2014
Singapore’s benchmark interest rate, the SIBOR, is tied to the U.S. Fed Funds Rate to minimise large swings in the USD-Singapore dollar exchange rate. Low interest rates are a direct cause of credit bubbles, and Singapore is no exception.
Since the SIBOR is used to price most of the loans and mortgages in Singapore, a very low SIBOR means cheap credit for Singaporeans. The ratio of household debt to gross domestic product now stands at around 75%, up from 55% in 2010 and 45% in 2005, according to data compiled by Standard Chartered.
Furthermore, 70% of those loans have floating interest rates, meaning that once the Fed tapers, mortgage repayments will increase too, possibly exposing unsustainable debt in the system. Full story

Little India rioter agrees to plead guilty to lesser charge after plea bargain deal with Singapore AGC desperate to avoid court proceeding

A 32-year-old Indian national, one of the 25 people accused of taking part in Singapore's worst riots in over 40 years, is expected to be the first person to plead guilty to a reduced charge, a media report said today.
Chinnappa Vijayaragunatha Poopathi is among 25 Indian nationals facing charges relating to last month's riot which left 39 police officers and civil defence staff injured and 25 vehicles, including 16 police cars, damaged.
The prosecution told the court today that it has agreed to reduce the charge against Chinnappa to allegedly being involved in an unlawful assembly of at least five persons despite having been ordered to disperse.
This came about after Chinnappa's lawyer Sunil Sudheesan made representations to the Attorney-General's Chambers. Full story

Singapore Government Escalating Restrictions on Internet Expression: HRW Report 2014

Singapore’s increased restrictions on news websites and other critical speech underscored the downward trend in free expression rights in the city-state, Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2014.

OPINION: The young and restless in Singapore - Seah Chiang Nee

The Star Online, 25 Jan 2014
A growing number of youths, once renowned for being apathetic, are opening up to claim their role in society.
By doing so, they are erasing some of Lee Kuan Yew’s Asian values, including his strongly held national consensus.
Also under siege is the idea of a social compact which defined obligations between citizens and government as well as Confucianism that preached unquestioned loyalty to seniors.
Lee’s advocacy of consensus, instead of confrontation and political contests, had helped keep the country under his party’s rule.
In thought and action, today’s generation appears to be rewriting some of these teachings. Full story

OPINION: Rich foreigners who mocked the poor in Singapore are by no means unique

Independent.ie, 23 Jan 2014
Singaporeans may be angry at the fund manager Anton Casey for his loathing of the ordinary folks on their island. But they shouldn't be surprised.
Because their government has created a country that sells itself to Westerners almost entirely with the lure of paying little or no income tax. Such a compact will always attract the type of expat for whom, like the late Margaret Thatcher, the concept of society and the shared endeavour that goes with it, is a nonsense. Why should I pay for other people's healthcare/education/public transport when I don't use it myself?
Anton Casey may flee Singapore after having his views aired in public, but he will surely leave many more like him behind. Link

Head of government-sponsored Singapore Kindness Movement Dr William Wan bemoans Singaporeans' lack of empathy and understanding for Anton Casey in ST article

Hardwarezone Forum, 24 Jan 2014
"Empathy for your fellow human being, no matter how bad that person, is a large part of what makes us humans.
To be fair, while a large portion of the community felt good about the "punishment" for Anton Casey, many also called for forgiveness since he has apologised. So the feeling of gloating when someone gets his come-uppance isn't exactly unanimous.
It is, however, significant enough for us to ask ourselves if we are losing touch with our empathetic nature.
It is indeed hard to reach for empathy and understanding, especially when one gets swept up in the emotions that such offensive conduct invariably brings out in us. Yet we must do so, to resist the tide of least resistance that would sweep us into concurring or even celebrating the condemnation of others who offend people like us." - Dr William Wan, Sec Gen Singapore Kindness Movement

In response, Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs Ho Peng Kee said that Took's case is still being investigated and it would not be appropriate to comment until the evidence is presented in Court.
Still, Associate Professor Ho said that checkpoint security is taken seriously and has been tightened since the Sept 11, 2001 terror attacks on the United States.
"To ensure that the checks at the checkpoints are robust, police and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) regularly carry out intrusion tests to critically assess and test security performance of checkpoints.
