Govt's poster boy Jim Rogers says Singapore needs immigrants

Forbes.com, 6 Jun 2013
When Rogers uprooted his family from New York and moved to Singapore in 2007, he famously declared, “If you were smart in 1807 you moved to London, if you were smart in 1907 you moved to New York City, and if you are smart in 2007 you move to Asia.” Six years later, he says he remains very happy about this decision and his daughters enjoy going to Chinese schools in Singapore.
While he describes Singapore as being “extraordinarily well run,” Rogers believes that limiting immigration will be detrimental to its future development. “One of the reasons why Singapore has been successful is because it encouraged immigration and nearly everyone in Singapore is an immigrant or family of an immigrant,” he says, before adding that “Lee Kuan Yew [Singapore’s founding Prime Minister] is a second-generation immigrant.” With its low taxes, low unemployment rate, and good rule of law, Singapore has always been an appealing immigration destination. In recent years, it has also become a haven for the world’s rich and famous. Besides Jim Rogers, Singapore’s new residents include Chinese celebrities Jet Li and Gong Li, as well as several members of Forbes Asia‘s Singapore rich list: New Zealand-born investor Richard Chandler (No. 5), Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin (No. 8), and property tycoons Raj Kumar & Kishin RK (No. 11), among others. Interview: Chee Soon Juan hopes for 'united' opposition

Radio Australia, 23 Nov 2012

IRANI: Yes but there are many people who are questioning this dramatic turnaround. These are the two people who sued you for defamation and now they're helping you free from bankruptcy, and this is all coming in the lead-up to the elections. Are you concerned that there could be some political manoeuvring here?

Chee Soon Juan:
"If I have anything to do with it we're going to make sure that the opposition becomes more united instead of being more fractured. I think there's a lot of room for us to be able to work towards that goal. So I'm not totally sold on this idea that this whole thing, I'm a player in this whole thing, and I think it's important for us to make sure that we continue to work towards a more united opposition."

George Yeo: Why I became a businessman

South China Morning Post, 13 Oct 2012
What made you become a businessman?
I was in politics for 23 years until I lost in the last election. The opposition leader who beat me, when he was interviewed, said: "We won not because my opponents [meaning me and my team] did not do a good job, but because people wanted us in Parliament." I thought if there was not something that I could change, because it was not something about me, maybe it was time to open a new chapter of my life. Full story

Prof Lim Chong Yah: Send more Singaporeans to Ivy League universities to do their PhD

The Malaysian Insider, 13 Oct 2012
Some of his suggestions have seen fruition in the past, such as his call years ago to fund the best students and young university staff to get their PhD abroad. And they went “by the dozens”. But the scheme no longer exists, a retrogressive move he still laments.
“They say it is too expensive. Well, we are quite a wealthy nation,” he remarks.
Indeed, in a span of nearly two hours, there is only once when Lim says he is “not happy” about something: When talking about scholarships and how “so many” are being given to foreigners to do a doctorate here.
Prefacing his view with the point that he is “not anti-foreigner”, he says: “I would prefer to send more and more Singaporeans abroad to Ivy League universities to do their PhD.” Full story

INTERVIEW: We have no interest in being a money-laundering country - Lee Hsien Loong

Business Standard, 13 Jul 2012
BS: There are concerns in some sections here that Singapore is a hub for black money. What are your thoughts on this?

Lee: We have no interest in being a money-laundering country. We are a financial centre in good standing, having good cooperation with other financial centres and regulators, good exchange of information of OECD standards. Why should we want to do this shady business? Between India and Singapore we have a DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance ALinkgreement), negotiated back in 2005. It provides for rules for tax treatment of investments in India by Singapore companies or companies based in Singapore and to make sure that these are bona fide and not just shell companies. There are also stringent LOB (limitation of benefits). So, I do not think shady money wants to come to Singapore. I think shady money will go somewhere else. Full interview

INTERVIEW: . Miller-McCune interview John Kampfner, author of "Freedom for Sale"

Miller-McCune, 4 Dec 2010
John Kampfner: What’s been explained to me, and what I find fascinating about the Singapore model, [is how] Singapore academics and people who are extremely well educated and very, very well traveled, who have seen and lived through the many alternatives, proselytize for the model. Some of them argue, and I think completely speciously and erroneously, that there is a sort of genetic issues around paternalism and East Asian values, and all this stuff.
