The Manila Times, 12 Jul 2013
SINGAPORE: Suicides in Singapore hit an all-time high of 487 in 2012 as more young people bogged down by stress and relationship woes took their own lives, a charity group dealing with the problem said on Friday.
The tally, a 29 percent increase from the 2011 total, was boosted by an 80 percent rise in the 20-29 age bracket, the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) said in a statement.
Suicides cases have consistently hovered around two percent of total deaths in Singapore, an affluent city-state of 5.3 million residents known for its pressure-laden school system.
Despite a virtually full employment rate, Singapore also has a highly competitive work environment. Full story

US scientist's family says Singapore inquest 'a sham and cover up' for murder

Fox News, 18 Jun 2013
The family of an American scientist found hanged in Singapore last year dismissed on Tuesday the city-state's findings that he committed suicide as "a sham and a cover-up" for a murder.
"I am not surprised by the state's findings because the state refused to consider murder, they only investigated suicide," Mary Todd, mother of the late electronics engineer Shane Todd, told AFP by email from the United States.
The Singapore government, summing up its position after two weeks of public hearings in May, on Monday rejected the family's conspiracy theory, saying Todd killed himself in June 2012 in his own apartment after a bout of depression.
"If they had nothing to hide, they would not care one way or the other what happened to Shane. Sadly, the inquest was never an open, non-adversarial, fact-finding inquiry as promised but was a sham and a cover-up," the mother said. Full story

Singapore says US scientist hanged himself

AFP
SINGAPORE — The Singapore government on Monday rejected a conspiracy theory behind the death of an American scientist found hanged in the city-state last year, saying he killed himself after a bout of depression.
Summing up its position at a coroner's inquest into electronics engineer Shane Todd's death in June 2012, a government statement said "it is clear from the medical forensic evidence that the medical cause of Shane's death was asphyxia due to hanging." Full story

Shane Todd's family reveals full evidence online to seek justice out of Singapore courtroom

KAJ18.com, 5 Jun 2013
MARION - A Marion family, who recently dropped their inquest request into the suspicious circumstances surrounding their son's death in Singapore, is now seeking justice for him outside the court room.
Tainted evidence, false testimonies, and a corrupt prosecution, they're all things Mary and Rick Todd say led to them walking out of a Singapore courtroom during the inquiry into their son's death. "It was a kangaroo court, it was a sham, it was a joke," said Mary, Shane's Mom.
This week, they put a public document online full of evidence suggesting Shane's murder. Their hope is that it will go viral.
"This document backs up every single thing we've said and every single contention we've made with facts. I'd like to get it out there. We hope that our country does that right thing, but I'm going to go on and live a good life. We can't do any more-we're just one family against 3 countries. We've received a lot of help from Senator Baucus and Tester's office, and Congressman Wolfe. We hope that continues." said Mary Todd. Full story

Singapore ambassador to US slams Associated Press report on Singapore police as "inaccurate, misleading and mischievous"

Global Times, 31 May 2013
Singapore's Ambassador to the United States Ashok Kumar Mirpuri has said that a news report filed by the Associated Press on the death of American engineer Shane Todd in Singapore was "inaccurate, misleading and mischievous," local media reported on Friday.
In a letter to the wire agency, Mirpuri referred to several inaccuracies in the story filed on May 27, including the headline which said that police in Singapore had admitted to "flouting protocol" when handling the high profile inquiry into the death of the American researcher.
"In explaining his actions under oath, the investigator did not say he had violated any protocols let alone 'admit' to doing so," Mirpuri wrote in the letter, with copies forwarded to the Washington Post and CBS. Full story

Singapore police admits not following protocols to dust for fingerprints or collect DNA samples as they already predetermined Shane Todd's death as suicide

The Washington Post, 27 May 2013
SINGAPORE (AP) -- Singapore police who examined the scene of an American's death admitted on the last day of a coroner's inquest Monday that they deviated from official protocols by not dusting for fingerprints or collecting DNA samples, and by examining the contents of a laptop computer there.
When asked by government lawyers why police had not ordered a further investigation of the apartment, police Sgt. Muhammad Khaldun Bin Sarif said he and his partner had made "a preliminary assessment" that pointed to suicide and determined there were "no signs of foul play." He said the officers decided as a result "not to perform fingerprint dustings or DNA swabs."
Asked why he had deviated from police protocols by assessing a personal laptop at a crime scene, Khaldun said he had found two notes in Todd's apartment, one of which contained a password which he used to gain access to the laptop nearby.
Khaldun explained that the protocol was only "a guideline which can be deviated from." He said he and his partner made an "operational decision" to assess Todd's laptop because the note containing the password "was left there for a reason" and would help police in determining whether there was foul play involved.
