Temasek throws lavish party in New York, announces plan to dabble in bitcoin

Coindesk, 27 Jun 2014
Temasek Holdings has a $172bn portfolio and had a net income of $12.1bn in 2013. According to the news report, the firm launched its first office in New York City yesterday, throwing a lavish party and promising that it will “seize opportunities in the entire American continent”.
The most surprising part of the launch came in Chairman Lim Boon Heng’s speech, in which he said the company had recently conducted a company-wide “bitcoin experiment”, with all staff at the company – from drivers to board members – taking part.
The experiment involved everyone getting their own bitcoin wallet and practicing by using it to donate to charity, Mr. Lim said. Full story

OPINION: Medishield Life Bites Hard

Singapore Notes, 27 Jun 2014
Last year, Medishield premiums were quietly increased without much fanfare. Han Fook Kwang himself woke up to discover that his MediShield premium had jumped to $1,589, double what was deducted ($800) from his Medisave account previously. Before you could even contemplate bailing out of the scam, they introduced the compulsory Medishield Life to skim you off for perpetuity.
As expected, leopards never change their spots. Medisave, one component of the Central Provident Fund (CPF), is also supposed to be our money, but that never stopped the grubby greedy hands from helping themselves to the loot. Discounting the placebo of the subsidies, valid only for a temporal grace period, the numbers are higher than present (already inflated) Medishield premiums. The only important table is the set of before and after numbers.
Other than per capita household income, the determining factor for entitlement to a "discount" is the Annual Value (AV) of one's home. The retiree living in his old house with no source of income will still have to pay full rate. Ditto the sickly and handicapped, those in dire need of affordable medicare, will just have to downgrade to the void deck to qualify for a miserly handout. Full story

A group of troublemakers from Indonesia create chaos and panic on SQ flight.

Stomp.com.sg, 26 Jun 2014
"Chaos was created by this group of Indonesian passengers on flight SQ863 from Hong Kong to Singapore on the afternoon of Jun 24.
"I was seated near the back of the plane.
"There was hot air blowing up from vents under the seats of the plane, making the air warm like a sauna. The air stewardess had explained that this would stop once the plane was in the air, and later I found she was right.
"The group of Indonesians complained about the heat and said that they had smelled gasoline at the back of the plane which I did not notice myself.
"They started to shout to all the passengers on board that the plane was unsafe to travel on and wanted everyone to disembark. Full story

Singapore's wussy NSF assaulted by foreign road bully in Sentosa

Comment: If our soldiers cannot even protect themselves from being bullied and assaulted by foreigners in Singapore, how can they protect the country from foreign invasion?

All Singapore Stuff, 26 Jun 2014
This happened at my residence in Sentosa this evening 25 June 2014. My son was driving back from his army camp and just after entering Sentosa, a car cut abruptly into my son's lane so my son horned at him to avoid any accident. As a result, the other driver horned back at my son. My son ignored this and continued driving not realizing that the other car driven by an angmo was following him.
Once my son reached our residence car park the other car tried to follow but was stopped by the security. So the angmo left the car outside and ran inside the carpark even though the security guards tried to stop him.
He ran towards my son who had parked his car and followed him. When my son entered the lift lobby using his access card, this ang mo barged into the lift and started shouting at my son accusing him of nearly causing an accident. My son denied this and then the ang mo pushed my son against the wall and strangled him while lifting him by the neck.
My son was shocked and then the angmo took a picture of my son and threatened him. The attacker then rushed off but was stopped by the security. We called the police who is investigating the matter. We managed to take a picture of the assailant. Full story

OPINION: Mr Lim Swee Say’s statements on CPF do not make any sense

Sgpolitics.net, 24 Jun 2014
Firstly, Mr Lim said that people should use less of their CPF money when they are young, and they should also try to defer drawing down their CPF when they reach the age of 55. These statements were made in BOTH the original press interview as well as the clarification that he later sent to the media (see here).
However, Mr Lim also asserts that the CPF is for housing, healthcare and education, in addition to serving retirement needs. He makes this assertion in the context of assuring Singaporeans that “CPF is your money“. Again, this point is repeated in BOTH the media interview as well as his subsequent clarification.
Why does this not make sense? If you want citizens to save more CPF money for retirement, then you should not be asking them to spend the CPF on so many needs including housing, healthcare and education simultaneously.
In other words, the CPF should NOT be turned into an escrow account to ensure that all Singaporeans pay for their expensive houses and medical bills from their own retirement savings, and in so doing relieve the state of the burden of caring for its citizen.  Full story

OPINION: What does Ms Jean Ang Yee’s mocking of elderly S’porean tell us about the values of NTUC Income, PA, and PAP?

Atans1.wordpress.com, 20 Jun 2014

What does Ms Jean Ang Yee Mei Lin tell us of the values of NTUC Income, PA, PAP and Hri Kumar?
If Tan Tock Seng Hospital was right to fire Roy Ngerng* for breach of its values, err what does the continued silence and inaction of NTUC Income PA, PAP and Hri Kumar* tell us of their values when someone associated with them mocks an elderly sick lady.
Maybe she is upholding the values that NTUC Income, PA, PAP and Hri Kumar hold dear? Remember a PAP minister sneering at the elderly poor? (OK. OK. The Pioneer Package is the PAP’s way of using our money to repent for his sneers.)
Hence their silence and inaction over the appalling, sickening behaviour of an active, senior grasss-roots leader? Full story

OPINION: Singaporean Roy Ngerng vs Malaysian doctor Ivan Ngeow Ko Yen

Singaporean Roy Ngerng was sacked by TTSH for allegedly defaming PM Lee even before the court case has begun. On the other hand, CGH opted to retain the service of Ivan Ngeow, a Malaysian doctor, who was convicted for outraging the modesty of a 19-year-old girl.
Is there a double standard here - one for Singaporean and another for foreigners?
Isn't an outrage of modesty conviction more serious than a defamation lawsuit?

CGH STANDS BY 'PERVERT' DOCTOR IVAN NGEOW KO YEN, SAYS HE IS 'WELL-LIKED' - The Real Singapore
A doctor from the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Changi General Hospital, Ivan Ngeow Ko Yen pleaded guilty on Tuesday to cross-dressing as a junior college schoolgirl and exposing himself to a NUS undergraduate.
The court learnt that the 37 year old medical doctor was loitering at a lift lobby in Clementi while donning a school uniform of Victoria Junior College, comprising a top and a skirt.
When he caught the attention of the girl, he lifted his skirt in her direction and expose his genitals as the lift doors were closing. A police report was made and Dr Ngeow was arrested the following month.
Dr Ngeow was born in Malaysia and studied at Raffles Institution and Victoria Junior College. He obtained his medical degree from Australia’s University of Melborune.
Despite the negative publicity on one of its doctors being charged in court for outrage of modesty of a young female student from NUS, Changi General Hospital (CGH) continues to stand by the side of Malaysian doctor Ivan Ngeow Ko Yen.
In a statement released to the media, a CGH spokesperson praised Dr Ngeow for being an ‘excellent’ doctor loved by his colleagues and patients alike and he remained very much ‘part of the team’. Full story

Philippine government forced Google to take down "Blood Stained Singapore" blog over an anti-pinoy post

The Global Dispatch, 19 Jun 2014
In a follow-up to a story Tuesday, the Singaporean blog that contained a posting about all kinds of mean and rude things you can do to Filipinos in the country has been taken down.
“Blood Stained Singapore”, the blog on the Google platform, Blogger is now gone.
The Philippines Embassy in Singapore requested action with the host country authorities against the author/blog owner after a June 16 post caused a stir due to what some may consider- racist and dangerous actions Singaporeans should take against Filipinos working in the country.
Some Singaporeans have been expressing their discontent with what they consider “lax” immigration laws claiming foreigners are stealing away their jobs.
The investigation is ongoing. Link

OPINION: The cause of growing anti-Filipino sentiments in Singapore

The Real Singapore, 19 Jun 2014
Recently, a blog that has been circulating online caught my attention. It was about someone suggesting all forms of ways and means on how to ill treat Pinoys when the opportunity presents itself. Though I disagree with such childish and aggressive behavior, I Understand where the hate stems from.
I caught up with a friend and we were just exchanging stories about our careers. But what she shared with me about working with Pinoys made me reflect on my own experiences. But first, let me share her story.
My friend M is from the hotel industry with 3 years of experience. She had recovered from an accident and managed to apply for a supervisory position because of her experience and qualification. However the salary they offered her was ridiculously low for her position at $1700 in a reknowned 4 Star hotel. Due to financial pressure she took the offer, grateful for having a job. In her department, she was the only local. Her manager was Pinoy and her surbodinates were also Pinoys. Full story

Should PRs Leaving Singapore be Allowed to Keep All of Their HDB Sales Proceeds? - Jeff Cuellar

Yahoo! Finance Singapore, 17 Jun 2014,
What enrages you more? The fact that you can’t cash out your Central Provident Fund (CPF) account unless you renounce your citizenship, or that Singapore Permanent Residents (PRs) can withdraw all of their CPF funds AND Housing and Development Board (HDB) sales proceeds with them when they leave Singapore?
Understandably, you’re pissed off because it’s not fair that someone from another country can take part in your social security program (CPF), use it as a glorified saving account, and withdraw all of it when he/she moves back home.
Let’s not forget the property issue as well. A PR flipping his/her property before leaving Singapore can easily make several hundred thousand dollars – more than enough to buy a huge landed property in 75% of the world.
These are issues that beg the question, “Should PRs be allowed to cash out whenever it’s convenient, or should they pay their fair share?”  Full story

76-year-old senior citizen who begged Hri Kumar for help on her CPF suffers from online harassment and cyber-lyncing by PAP Internet Brigade

The Online Citizen, 16 Jun 2014
When 76 year-old Ms Rene Yap brought up her financial woes at Mr Hri Kumar’s forum for Thompson-Toa Payoh residents about the Central Provident Fund, she had requested for Mr Hri Kumar’s help with “getting her money back”, or rather what she felt was due to her in her CPF account.
She might not have realised that it has started a cyber-lynching effort against her.
At the end of the forum, Mr Hri Kumar reportedly told The Sunday Times: “This is a resident who has an issue. I spoke with her personally after the dialogue and I’ll be doing my best to assist her. She’s a resident in one of the landed estates in Thomson.”
Unfortunately, this indication of where Ms Yap could be living might have led some online sleuths to “uncover” her residential address, in a bid to discredit her need for her CPF reserves.
In an image post titled “Feeling sorry for her? She stays in a bigger house than you”, Fabrications About the PAP (FAP), a Facebook page known for its support of the ruling People’s Action Party, published a picture of the front of Ms Yap’s home, including the street name of the property.
“Auntie chose not to withdraw her CPF at 55,” the post charged. “Auntie has been receiving monthly payouts; auntie is well to do. Auntie asked for some flexibility on her remaining CPF, but now used as a political tool by irresponsible opposition…” Full story

Ministry of Manpower returned passports to 40 Thai students cheated by local HR companies after intervention by Thai government

Pattaya Mail, 15 Jun 2014
The Singaporean government on Friday returned passports to some 40 Thai students who were cheated by manpower firms in that country, said Pravit Khiengpol, director-general of the Thai Labour Ministry’s Employment Department.
The return of confiscated passports came after nearly 30 Thai students lodged a complaint with the Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok that they were lured by recruitment agencies which had displayed advertisements on a website and on Facebook that Thai students could receive training at famous hotels, restaurants and clubhouses in Singapore.
After working in Singapore for a while, the Singaporean authorities made random inspections and found that the documents allowing them to be trainees were forged.
Their passports were confiscated by the Singaporean authorities while many were asked to become witnesses by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower.
Officials of Thailand's Employment Department said later that about 40 Thai students were still stranded in Singapore. Full story

Singapore government refutes SCMP report that Singaporeans no longer trust the PAP leaders

XIN MSN News, 13 Jun 2014
The Republic’s Consul-General in Hong Kong, Mr Jacky Foo, on Friday (June 13) rebutted the claims made in a South China Morning Post (SCMP) report on June 9 which said “Singaporeans no longer trust their leaders”.
In a forum letter to SCMP, Mr Foo said the report, titled “Writer Catherine Lim’s open letter to Singaporean PM fuels social media debate”, quoted author Ms Catherine Lim as saying that Singaporeans no longer trust their leaders.
Mr Fo point out that Ms Lim had first made the claim two decades ago in 1994, when the ruling (PAP) had won the 1991 general election with 61 per cent of the vote, a result which Ms Lim thought was a poor performance indicating a “great affective divide” between the Government and the people.
Since then, the ruling party has taken the country through a number of serious crises relatively unscathed and won four further general elections by healthy margins, Full story

OPINION: Simmering anger in overrcrowded city-state puts PAP government in a quandary

The Edge Malaysia, 12 Jun 2014
Singapore is confronting the perils of please-all economics. Ageing citizens are pushing the government for bigger nest eggs and more subsidised healthcare and housing. There is also popular resentment against letting more foreigners in, and not much appetite for increasing the 7 percent consumption tax. Squaring this fiscal circle will be a long-term challenge.
Already, there's simmering anger in the city-state about overcrowded trains and costly public housing. About 2,000 people gathered recently to demand that the state-run retirement plan raise its 4 percent annual interest rate. People protested last year, too, when the government unveiled a plan to boost the resident population by 30 percent to 6.9 million by 2030, with immigration compensating for a drooping birth rate.
The multifaceted discontent puts Singapore's fiscally conservative government in a quandary. Expanding the economy - and the tax base - with less foreign labour will mean improving the productivity of the local workforce. Full story

OPINION: TTSH, MOH, PAP MP Hri Kumar....

Singapore Note, 12 Jun 2014
In law, sub judice, classical Latin literally for "under judgment" (Latin sub iūdice : sub, beneath, before + iūdice, ablative of iūdex, judge.), means that a particular case or matter is under trial or being considered by a judge or court and therefore prohibited from public discussion elsewhere.
That's not stopping the Ministry of Health (MOH) from blabbing about it. Worse, as Ravi pointed out, MOH is not party to Mr Ngerng's contract of employment. Tan Tock Seng Hospital's (TTSH) sacking may be a case of jumping the gun, given the lawsuit - which neither involves TTSH and MOH - has yet to run its course. Having said that, we know that an opposition political leader did lose his job over taxi claims. Full story

OPINION: Suing blogger Roy Ngerng is ‘a PR disaster of their own making’ for Singapore government - Calvin Soh

Legal action taken against Singapore blogger Roy Ngerng by the country’s Prime Minister is a PR disaster of the government’s own making, a prominent former ad man has said.

OPINION: Bloggers feel Singapore heat

TTR Weekly, 11 Jun 2014
A Singaporean blogger sued by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for libel has been fired from his job as a healthcare worker for “improper public conduct”, his employer said Tuesday.
It is the first time a Singaporean leader has taken legal action against an online critic and indicates that in the city state, blogger and online news sites are not immune to court action.
Local media in Singapore is tightly controlled, leaving amateur bloggers as the strongest critics of the long-ruling People’s Action Party.
Media firms like Bloomberg, The Economist and the Financial Times have previously paid damages and apologised to Singapore leaders including Lee and his father, former prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, for publishing articles found to be defamatory.
International human rights groups have accused Singapore leaders of using financially ruinous libel actions to silence critics and political opponents.
The Lees and other ruling party leaders say the lawsuits are necessary to protect their reputations from unfounded attacks. Full story

OPINION: Dr Janil Puthucheary makes complete nonsense on Medishield

Trulysingapore.wordpress.com, 11 Jun 2014
Janil Puthucheary made complete nonsense when he asserted that it is not valid to compare Medishield’s 63% loss ratio (payout) against American health insurance’s 80 to 85% loss ratio (payout) because Medishield is public and not-for-profit whereas US medical insurance is private and for-profit scheme. Any idiot will know that all else being equal, America’s for-profit scheme should end up with a lower payout while Singapore’s supposedly not-for-profit scheme should end up with a higher payout but the reality is the other way around.
Dr Puthucheary warned that Medishield will become insolvent if payouts are more than premiums collected. But that didn’t address Mr Gerald Giam’s concern about low Medishield payout when Medishield capital adequacy ratio was already 40% above MAS requirements. Does Dr Puthucheary know that the targeted capital adequacy ratio is 200%?
Both he and Health Minister Gan Kim Yong argued that it is very difficult to estimate health-care costs. In that case, how does Minister Gan come up with a Health Ministry budget every year? Full story
