Singapore-based jewellery firm's MD arrested in India airport for smuggling diamonds from Singapore, husband uncontactable

Vihari Poddar, who is managing director of the Singapore-based Vihari Jewels Pvt Ltd, was detained at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on Tuesday night after she landed from a Singapore flight.
According to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials, Vihari was passing through the green channel with the undeclared diamond-studded gold jewellery, which she has stuffed inside her underclothes.
The official told that Vihari's arrest was a part of the joint operation of DRI and the Directorate of Vigilance. Following Vihari's detention, the agencies also carried out search in her shops at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Santacruz and recovered more jewellery worth Rs. 4 crore.
During interrogation, Vihari has also confessed to have made about ten such trips in the past and having smuggled gold and diamond jewellery. Full story
