The Ministry of National Development is finalising a policy to allow singles to buy new Housing Board (HDB) flats, said its minister Khaw Boon Wan.
In a written reply to a question addressed in Parliament on Monday, Khaw said the policy is expected to be implemented later in the year.
Response to the proposed change in ruling is mixed among the online community While some are supportive of the change, others are still unhappy about the current age restriction, such as Facebook user "Maya Korrs", who lists her real name as Manjit Kaur.
Writing on The Online Citizen Facebook page, she said: “When will the Government understand that singles 25 and above want their own place so they can have their own life and settle down a few years down the road in their late 20s and early 30s? Why must singles be OLDER than 35 to buy a house? Singles 25 and above don’t need a roof?”
Another Facebook user, "Pae Thonyaem" questioned whether relaxing the rules on HDB buying, resulting in additional demand, will mean more competition for other HDB flat buyers: “New demand = new supply? Will he (Khaw) adjust planned BTO (Build-To-Order) figures to cater to this new demand?” Full story
