Secular societies should be kept free from the religious right

SINGAPORE - Education Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen made a sensible statement today that schools shouldn’t be proxy battlegrounds between the Christian right and gay interest groups. Dr Ng rightly pointed out and I quote that “our students grow and learn best in an environment where they can develop their own beliefs in an objective manner, with adequate time to reflect on difficult issues, free from the rhetoric and emotional upheavals of contending parties.” Perhaps, the only slight criticism of Dr Ng’s statement was his allusion to gay interest groups being potentially involved in the proxy battlegrounds. The truth is that homosexuality was portrayed by the old AWARE comprehensive sexuality program in a neutral light, something which Dr Thio Su Mien acknowledged.
