Debate stirs among Singaporeans over role of the president

SINGAPORE -- Singapore is facing strife of an unusual kind. A parliamentary election in May that turned out in part to be a referendum on the People's Action Party's style of government is being echoed in the run-up to the presidential election, set for Aug. 27.
The wish for more checks and balances is dramatized in the view offered by several prospective presidential candidates, amplified by a sampling of netizens, that the office of president could or should be more openly interventionist, almost a rival power center to the Government. Full story
