Female commuters express their fear of sexual harassment from drunk and horny foreign nationals on late night MRT trains

The Real Singapore, 13 Oct 2014
I want to say again, I am not discriminating foreigners or xenophobic based on their skin colour or religion or race. I am just worried for my own safety because I have been sexually harassed many times while taking the last MRT train home. I can't take the normal train hours due to my work schedule and I really worry for my own safety and the safety of other female passengers.
Some of these passengers just keep staring at you as if they are going to rape you. A security patrol of 2 man walking up and down the train throughout the whole journey would really add a lot of security to the train and adds a lot of comfort to women like me that takes the last train home. Indian readers of NYT complain that a cartoon by Singaporean cartoonist Heng Kim Song had "disparaged" their beloved country

UT San Diego, 6 Oct 2014

The New York Times apologized for an editorial cartoon in its international edition that critics said mocked India's Mars Mission by showing a man in a traditional dhoti and turban, leading a cow on a leash and knocking on the door of the "Elite Space Club" while inside two bespectacled men in bow ties look perplexed by the sound.
The cartoon was published online Sept. 28 after India's Mangalyaan probe began orbiting Mars at a cost of $74 million (4.5 billion rupees) which BBC News reported was "one of the cheapest interplanetary space missions ever."
Late Sunday, Andrew Rosenthal, editorial page editor for The New York Times, apologized via Facebook.
"A large number of readers have complained about a recent editorial cartoon in The International New York Times, about India's foray into space exploration. The intent of the cartoonist, Heng Kim Song, was to highlight how space exploration is no longer the exclusive domain of rich, Western countries. Mr. Heng, who is based in Singapore, uses images and text - often in a provocative way - to make observations about international affairs. We apologize to readers who were offended by the choice of images in this cartoon. Mr. Heng was in no way trying to impugn India, its government or its citizens. We appreciate that readers have shared their feedback, which we welcome."  Full story

PM Lee: Govt doesn’t plan to curb inflow of foreign labour as they help create good jobs for Singaporeans

The Malay Mail Online, 4 Oct 2014
Singapore probably won’t need more measures to restrain the inflow of foreign workers as a further tightening could deter overseas companies from setting up business in the city, prime minister Lee Hsien Loong said.
The pace of increase for foreign workers has slowed and the country’s economic restructuring is under way, Lee said in a speech yesterday. A drop in investment by overseas companies may also hurt job opportunities for the city’s citizens, Lee said.
The latest “numbers do show that the foreign worker growth has slowed to a more sustainable level, and is about where we want it to be,” Lee said. “I do not expect any further measures to tighten foreign worker numbers further.” Full story

Conservative author cum filmmaker of Indian origin Dinesh D'Souza gets 5 years probation for illegal donations to US politician

The New York Times, 23 Sep 2014
The conservative author and documentary filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza was spared prison time on Tuesday after pleading guilty earlier this year to violating federal campaign finance laws.
Judge Richard M. Berman of Federal District Court in Manhattan sentenced Mr. D’Souza to five years of probation — including eight months living under supervision in a “community confinement center” in San Diego — and a $30,000 fine. The sentencing brought to a close a high-profile legal battle that began with Mr. D’Souza’s indictment in January on charges that he illegally used straw donors to contribute to a Republican Senate candidate in New York in 2012.
The government charged Mr. D’Souza with illegally arranging to have two people — an employee and a woman with whom he was romantically involved — donate $10,000 each to the campaign of an old friend from Dartmouth College, Wendy E. Long, with the understanding that he would reimburse them in cash for their contributions. Full story

Ex-PAP grassroot leader from China Yang Yin had applied for his PR using a fake degree bought with Madam Chung's money

TR Emeritus, 30 Sep 2014
According to a Chinese new media report yesterday (29 Sep), a friend of 87-year-old widow Chung Khin Chun told the media that he has the evidence to prove that PRC tour guide Yang Yin obtained money from Mdm Chung to procure a fake degree in China.
Mdm Chung’s friend said that at the time, Yang asked Mdm Chung to wire S$4,000 to him so that he can procure a fake degree in China. It is believed that the degree may have been used to help Yang obtain an Employment Pass to work in Singapore in 2009 and later apply for his PR.
The friend produced an acceptance letter supposedly from the “University of Financial and Trade Beijing China” (北京财经贸易学院) to show that Yang was accepted by the university to study for a bachelor’s degree in 2006 ...... Full story

Discriminatory job ad by PRC startup angers developer community in Singapore

Tech In Asia, 24 Sep 2014

A job ad for a lead software developer in Singapore went viral today – for all the wrong reasons. Posted by Shanghai-based startup Sugar, the job description quickly raised the ire of the app development community.
In the section about the sort of person they’re seeking, they allegedly insinuated that being ambitious supposedly means eschewing family life:
You are ambitious, intense and entrepreneurial, and you dream of doing truly epic shit with your life. You recoil at the thought of having 1.15 kids, balloting for a flat, saving up for a Toyota and waiting to withdraw your CPF savings at 65 (or 70, or 80, or 120).

PRC insurance agents going door-to-door to con senior citizens with false information about the insurance they are selling

Hardwarezone Forum, 24 Sep 2014
At about 8.40pm a Chinese speaking female agent that sounds a lot like a China women knock on my door asking if there are anyone between the age of 40-60 years old or 45-60 years old ( I did not pay much attention when she asked me the first time and I am the only 1 at home and I am not within this age group). I reply “no” and walk back to my bedroom.
While in my room I heard her knocking my neighbours’ door but resume packing my items. But as she kept on speaking none stop it gets more and more annoying to me as the way she speaks is CLEARLY SOUNDS LIKE SHE IS TRYING TO MISLEAD MY OLD NEIGHBOUR.
She repeatedly bring out the word “Singapore Government” many times and make it sounds like she is working on behalf of our local Government. Another reason why I assume she is China lady beside her China tone Chinese that is not commonly found in Singaporean Chinese is that she uses the word “Singapore” infront of Government. For locals, we merely says “Government”.
She claim it is an insurance that is brought by our “Singapore Government” for everyone between the age of 40-60 years old or 45-60 years old. Which I instantly know is NOT TRUE.
At this point I am really pissed and mad at her FALSE CLAIMS and MISLEADING so I stomp out of my house to interrupt their conversation by telling my neighbour that the money is deducted from her CPF account thus it wasn’t free as claimed by that agent. Full story

OPINION: How many fake FTs like Yang YIn are out there in Singapore?

All Singapore Stuff, 15 Sep 2014
Undeniably, our loose immigration has brought in fakes from all over the world.
We just had Yang Yin from China who was granted PR and EP almost instantaneously when he claimed to have graduated from the prestigious Zhejiang University of China, a China Ivy League in the class of Fudan University and Shanghai Jiaotong University.
However his job was a tour guide in China and ICA valued him so much as a rare Foreign Talent. He went on to cheat a rich 87-year widow of $40 million of her assets.
Imagine the stupidity of ICA, a graduate from an Ivy Leage University whose occupation was a tour guide. Clearly something is wrong, his qualification got to be a fake.
Worst than that he even managed to infiltrate the PM’s AMK GRC as a grassroots leader and impersonated as a Director of the Singapore Chinese Chamber Of Commerce and Industry. Full story
