Latest Dengue Death in Singapore, Sparks New Warning Of More Outbreaks as NEA Struggles

Authorities in Singapore are warning that Singapore’s most deadly outbreak of dengue fever since 2005 could get worse, after the disease claimed its seventh victim despite a vigorous effort by the government to control the epidemic.
More than 20,000 cases of the tropical, mosquito-borne disease have been identified in Singapore so far in 2013, spawning a series of multi-lingual YouTube videos about and a “Do The Mozzie Wipeout” campaign, launch in April, that promotes a series of at-home steps one can go through to kill mosquitoes and stop the disease from spreading. Seventh dengue fatality reported in Singapore, dengue fever cases top 20,000 cases

The Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) reported today that they were notified of the seventh fatality due to dengue fever this year, according to a press release Nov. 20.
The patient was a 53-year-old Chinese woman who was first seen at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) Emergency Department (ED) on 11 Nov 2013 with a history of fever. She was diagnosed with dengue and admitted. Her condition deteriorated and she subsequently passed away on 16 Nov 2013.
The dengue epidemic in Singapore has eclipsed the 20,000 case mark, according to official numbers from the NEA. As of Nov. 20, the agency has the total case count at 20,115. Full story
