The Singapore Flyer, dubbed the world’s largest ferris wheel, embarked on its first spin on Monday night with enthusiasts paying up to S$8,888 per capsule to be among the first to experience the breathtaking Flyer.

According to Reuters, the Flyer is a crucial part of the government’s plans to increase its appeal to tourists. For this reason, the Flyer has been strategically placed across from the Marina Bay Sands casino complex due to open in 2009. The wheel is also within close proximity to the Formula One Grand Prix site which is set to take place in September.

At 165 metres, the Singapore Flyer is 30 metres taller than its British counterpart, the London Eye. It offers sweeping views over Singapore as well as parts of neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia. Costing S$240 million, the Flyer has 28 bus-sized capsules attached to a circular frame measuring 150 metres in diameter. The Flyer can accommodate 28 people in each capsule, who will each pay around S$30 for the 30 minute ride.

Although a majority of revenue is expected to come from corporate clients and travel agents, it is believed that around 20 percent of guests will be walk-in customers.

The Singapore Flyer will officially open to the public on April 15. However, a series of soft launches will take place this month, including a Valentine's Day special for couples.
