SDP says ‘no justifiable reason’ for population increase

Opposition parties are in the process of responding to the government’s Population White Paper with the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) the first to release a media statement saying that “there are no justifiable reasons for the PAP to raise the population by such a large number in such a short span of time.”
The SDP said the “reasons for the new target have been offered before and appear to be re-packaged for the White Paper”.
The Population White Paper gave three reasons justifying the increase in population – to maintain a strong Singaporean core, to create good jobs for Singaporeans and to provide Singaporeans with a higher quality of life.
The SDP says that these are the same three reasons used to “defend its policy of increasing the population to its current level of 5.3 million”, adding that the results have been unsuccessful. Full story
