WP candidate for Hougang Mr Png Eng Huat did in fact go through the internal balloting process for the NCMP post offered to the party’s East Coast team last May after the general elections, but he did not receive enough votes to be selected.
That Mr Png’s name was on the ballot contradicts his earlier remarks made to the press that he had withdrawn his nomination for the NCMP post because he was opposed to the NCMP scheme on principle. (Channel News Asia, “I took my name out of the ballot for NCMP post: WP’s Png”, 21 May 2012)
Later, Mr Png clarified that he could not remove his name from the internal nomination process as the entire East Coast GRC team had to be in the ballot. He said that this was the selection procedure that he had to go through.
Mr Png said that his choice of words used during the interview with Channel News Asia may have been ambiguous, and he apologised for the confusion. Full story
