In a letter to the forum pages of the TODAY newspaper, MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC Hri Kumar has responded to Nominated Member of Parliament Eugene Tan's commentary titled, 'The value of a by-election.'
Tan had written that a by-election should be called "within a reasonable time, or certainly without an inordinate delay" and that "the default position should be that a by-election should be automatic, although there is no hard and fast rule on the timing."
In his response, Mr Hri Kumar said Tan's comments ignore the law and the reasons behind the law.
The MP said Singapore's democracy is based on elections that are between political parties and not between individuals. Full story
