Smuggling of gold from Singapore to India on the rise

Chennai,Oct12 (PTI) Gold chains, worth rs 20.5 lakh, allegedly smuggled into the country from Singapore have been seized at the airport here, customs officials said today. Based on information that gold chains were being smuggled by five persons from Singapore on Tuesday a strict vigil was maintained, Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Commissioner of Customs (Air), said in a release here. "According to the passengers, gold chains were given to them by unknown persons at Singapore airport to be handed over to a person outside Chennai airport for monetary consideration," he said, adding, a total of 813 gm of 22 carat gold chains were recovered.
