In his book, Nathan revealed a bitter past: Nathan was born in a poor family and when he was 16 years old, his class teacher accused him of stealing his classmate's textbook and he was then expelled. He was too ashamed to face his mother and thus, he left home and even become a beggar.
Who would have thought that the boy who slept in alleys and believed that "a poor man's justice would not be done and a drop out could only be a hawker assistant" would one day become the President of Singapore?
