OPINION: Ex-NTU prof highlights problems with local universities’ hiring policies

n a comment posted on a TR article, Mr Chua highlighted three problems in local universities’ HR policies – a focus on research to the exclusion of teaching, a focus on superstars and over-centralization of power at the university level.
“Research superstars cost a lot of money. They also don’t want to come to Singapore. Let’s face it. There’s very little about Singapore that’s appealing- cost of living is very high. Our main attraction is that we are a relatively stable country in Asia. Our universities have this attitude that you attract superstars by throwing lots of money at them. What this does is shrink the pot for everyone else. Regular academic staff are let go, and are replaced by part timers and adjuncts. These policies have affected BOTH Singaporeans and foreigners.” Full story
