Firms need caution working with Facebook
ZDNet Asia, 31 Mar 2010
While recognizing that Facebook as a platform to communicate with customers is "too big to avoid", a Singapore-based lawyer urged caution for companies looking to utilize the social-networking site for commercial use.
This comes after Facebook faced backlash from users for its proposed changes to its privacy policy over the weekend. This involved allowing a list of "pre-approved" third-party Web sites to access user data from Facebook, such as names, profile pictures, gender, user IDs and friend connections, while the person is logged into the social-networking Web site. Why Hong Kong and Singapore property could be income hotspots
Citywire, 31 Mar 2010
There is a growing consensus that Hong Kong and Singapore are poised for recovery this year, with forecasts for GDP growth in the region of around 7% for 2010 in Singapore alone.
Investors looking for strong income growth should benefit from what is expected to translate into stronger demand for property and particularly office space in both regions, with managers arguing that office sector prices are still at relatively low levels.
While property share prices remain relatively depressed, yield from rental income is starting to rise markedly in hotspots such as Singapore and Hong Kong. Full Story

More Indian Companies Looking to Incorporate in Singapore
BusinessWire India, 30 Mar 2010
The governments of the two countries are actively promoting this increased cooperation. Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong recently visited India and proposed to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that Indian businesses should use Singapore as the platform for corporate expansion and networking with major Asian leaders and businessmen. An increasing number of small and large Indian businesses are paying attention to these messages; as Indian businesses look beyond their borders and undertake acquisition of foreign assets, Singapore is emerging as the preferred venue for their expansion. OPINION: Singapore's Gaming Gamble - Ben Bland
Asia Sentinel, 29 Mar 2010
Setting aside its deep-seated puritanical instincts, the ruling People's Action Party has made a big double bet. Firstly, that the casinos will attract enough punters to allow the operators, Malaysia's Genting and America's Las Vegas Sands, to recoup their massive investments and boost the wider Singapore economy. And secondly, that the casinos can thrive without leading to an increase in prostitution, addiction and organized crime, the sort of problems that tend to proliferate around gaming houses in Asia.
At stake is Singapore's carefully-cultivated international image as a safe and orderly commercial hub and the domestic credibility of a government that clams legitimacy from always knowing best. Full Story

The rise and fall of a pimp who lured Thai women to Singapore as prostitutes
Bangkok Post, 28 Mar 2010
He's deceitful, a liar and a schemer who is highly secretive, but he boasts an annual income of millions of baht. Although he is Malaysian-Chinese, he is a persuasive talker, fluent in Thai, well dressed, small in stature with women finding him simply handsome.
Aged only 31, he lures poor Thai women to Singapore with the promise of wealth by selling their bodies. He is the head pimp, or mangda in Thai, of the infamous jungle prostitutes of Woodlands, an outer suburb of the city-state where a large number of imported foreign labourers work mostly in factories.
For more than five years, he has "filled a need", as he puts it, by providing poorly paid Indian, Bengali, Thai, Malaysian and Chinese men with sex that they can afford. Full Story

Singapore proposes ‘bridging’ India, China
Free Malaysia Today, 28 Mar 2010
In what is a masterstroke in international politics Singapore is proposing a forum for the business and political leaders of India and China to be held in the city-state.
From all outward appearances it just leaves to wonder what is in store for the Republic. Plenty if seen from the prism of geopolitics and what all of that entails
Though the idea had originated from state-owned company, Temasek Holdings, nothing beats denying that most of what is advocated by Temasek is also the ‘diplomatic speak’ of the state. Full Story

OPINION: Democracy a loser in trade free-for-all - Kenneth Davidson
The Sydney Morning Herald, 28 Mar 2010
Behind the mantra of the superiority of the market - reinforced by privatisation, low taxes and small government - is the aim of shifting the decision-making process from the one-person, one-vote democratic formula to the one-dollar, one-vote market formula.
Hence the secrecy surrounding the negotiations of the new Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), which began in Melbourne two weeks ago. The agreement is designed to replace a number of individual bilateral free trade agreements with an agreement embracing Australia, the US, NZ, Chile, Singapore, Brunei, Peru and Vietnam. Full Story
