SINGAPORE, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew is now in hospital after being implanted a cardiac pacemaker, said a statement by the Prime Minister's Office on Sunday

According the statement, the minor surgery to implant a cardiac pacemaker was performed on Saturday because Lee has been experiencing symptoms of cardiac arrhythmia, which showed up with his atrial flutter on Sept. 14 this year.

Lee, who is recovering from the surgery, is expected to be discharged from the hospital next Monday.

Lee Kuan Yew, who was born on Sept. 16, 1923, led Singapore to independence and served as its first prime minister from 1959 to 1990.
