At the New York agency groups that dominate the business, the post is usually filled by an American, a Briton or an Australian with an inability to tuck in his shirttails or his sarcasm. Sometimes a Continental European with a preference for designer jeans and funky eyewear is pressed into service.
Last week, Ogilvy & Mather, an agency owned by WPP Group, did something that no other big agency based in the United States or Europe has done. It named a Singaporean, Tham Khai Meng, as its worldwide creative director. He may be the first Asian to hold such a post. The appointment is a clear sign of how the industry's center of balance, like that of the global economy, is shifting eastward.
