“Development”, “Democracy”, and false arguments why one must come before the other

It is often difficult to identify false arguments because they are often interwoven with facts and presented in a seemingly systematic and logical manner, but this attempt must be made if we are to counter the propaganda that is often dished out by our mainstream media.

Today, I shall attempt to critique an article published on 9 July in the Straits Times Review page written by K. Kesavapany, entitled “Development sets stage for democracy“, with the aim of identifying the false arguments therein, and hopefully debunking them.

Kesavapany begins by taking issue with a recent editorial published by the Wall Street Journal criticizing Singapore. “Lee Kuan Yew’s Singapore can rightly be proud of many achievements, but full democracy is not one of them,” the Wall Street Journal declared. Kesavapany complains in particular about the use of the word “but“, in an obvious attempt to question why the twin objectives of economic development and democracy should necessarily be placed side by side.
