Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon has moved quickly to quash rumours of a merger between it and rival Singapore Airlines due to soaring costs related to fuel consumption.

Media outlets raised the possibility this week that Qantas could have been considering a merger or regional alliance with Singapore after the two heads were seen talking at a recent conference.

“I said hello to the Chief Executive of Singapore Airlines at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual meeting and had not seen him for 12 months before that,” said Mr Dixon to The Australian.
