Lee Kuan Yew's counsel

Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew does not expect the Ma Ying-jeou administration to bring greater "international space" for Taiwan because Beijing will not allow it, unless there is a "clear-cut return" by both major parties - the KMT and DPP - to the original Taiwan position of eventual reunification.

Lee, 85, revered as "a fish too big for its pond," made these observations last week in an interview with Taiwan's Central News Agency. Singapore's Strait Times carried a full transcript Friday.

"You think they're going to give you more international space when they are not sure which way you are going? If the intention is eventually to go for independence, why should they allow you the international space? If both parties in Taiwan are agreed on eventual reunification, that would be different."
