A mock-protest in Singapore by FMCG brand Anlene, to promote its Orchard Mile Run has backfired. The PR stunt conceived by Sporting Spectrum and Upstream Asia had about 20 men in a ’mock protest’ along Orchard Road on Sunday afternoon to complain about not being able to take part in the women-only run. A member of the public alerted the police of the ''protests'' and it was halted when organisers could not produce a permit. Police are investigating the incident. The Anlene Orchard Mile, which will be held on June 15, is in its second year. Organisers had hoped 5,000 women would sign up for the run.
Blogger Ephraim Loy shared her experience on a similar case last year…
“As part of the marketing for the nation''s youth festival called SHINE, our team had thought of the same idea - to wear placards and create awareness regarding the festival. But to err on the safe side (i.e as law-abiding citizens) we consulted the Police since we thought we had to have a permit. The process was tedious. The Police had requested to see all our placards. They wanted to know our route, whether we would be shouting any slogans, how the placards were to be fixed onto our bodies etc. By the end of the entire process our interest had died down.
But we still did it. The Police had advised that no permit was needed and recommended that we stay in groups of two to three."
