SINGAPORE: The Singapore government will award S$8 billion ($5.9 billion) worth of construction and information technology projects in the fiscal year 2008, the government said on Monday.
The finance ministry said S$5.8 billion of construction projects will be awarded to develop Singapore's central business district, where the country's first casino is set to open in 2009, and to maintain the island's highways. About S$1.2 billion worth of contracts will be awarded for the purchase of goods and services such as automated toll systems at checkpoints, while the remaining S$1 billion will be used to fund information technology projects, the ministry said.
Singapore's building sector has boomed on the back of the construction of two multi-billion dollar casinos, an expansion of a rail network and the building of a new highway. Growth has slowed in the sector -- it grew 14.6 per cent in January to March, down from 24.3 per cent in the fourth quarter, advance estimates showed -- but it is still the fastest among Singapore's key industries.
