The sold out WiMAX Forum Congress Asia show in Singapore this week provided the budding technology a much-needed shot in the arm following a string of negative news in the past month.
Leading the way is Motorola, who announced a contract to supply a network to Taiwan’s First International Telecom (Fitel). Under the scope of the deal, Motorola and its partner, UTStarcom, will deploy a WiMAX network as a part of the operator’s commitment to the M-Taiwan project, a government initiative to accelerate WiMAX ecosystem development and create a city-wide broadband network to support wireless broadband services to consumers. Fitel received its operator license to provide WiMAX services for northern Taiwan in July 2007. It is Motorola’s third WiMAX project secured in Taiwan in the last eight months.
