Animal rights activists have accused telco giant Optus of animal cruelty after the company used a chimpanzee as the star of its latest advertising campaign.

The television commercial, which features a chimp dressed as a lawyer "prosecuting" rival phone companies in a mock courtroom over their high call rates, was yesterday slammed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) as animal exploitation.

The outspoken group claims apes were often beaten and given electric shocks by handlers to get them to perform on camera.
