Singapore’s population could rise by up to 30 per cent by 2030, with foreigners making up the bulk of the increase.
But the near-seven million population figure has received fierce criticism from local residents fearful that quality of life will suffer on the tiny island, which has already seen a huge influx of foreign workers.
With an extra one million foreigners relocating to Singapore by 2030, this would leave Singaporeans only just in the majority as 55 per cent of the population.
This negative feedback from the white paper forced the Singapore government to backtrack on the figure saying it was a “worst-case scenario” and not a target. Full story
