Singapore and Malaysia have ended a dispute that marred ties between the neighbouring countries for decades with a historic deal over Malaysian railway land on Singapore territory, paving the way for a further warming of relations.
Since Singapore was kicked out of the Malaysian federation and became independent in August 1965, the Malaysian-controlled railway running into the centre of Singapore had been a thorn in the side of the city-state’s government.
Under this week’s agreement signed by visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the railway land is to be given to Singapore eventually. Full story
