Singapore shopping promotion drives tourism spend

SINGAPORE. Singapore’s tourism industry got a boost over the first month of the nation’s annual Great Singapore Sale (GSS), as tourist spending with MasterCard rose +21% to US$158.1 million in the period from 28 May to 26 June.
MasterCard cardholders from the US, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia and Japan were the biggest spenders in the first weekend of GSS, the credit card company noted.
Both local and tourist MasterCard cardholders spent a total of US$454.7 million during the first month of the GSS, an increase of +23% over the same period last year (29 May – 27 June 2009). Overall, the number of transactions rose +17% to 3,698,131 this year. Full Story
