SINGAPORE: Veteran Singapore political figure Joshua B. Jeyaretnam, the first opposition candidate to win a parliament seat since independence, died early Tuesday of heart failure at 82, a news report said.
Jeyaretnam, often referred to in Singapore as J.B.J, died at a local hospital, Channel NewsAsia reported, citing his son.

Outspoken Singapore dissident dies
OBITUARY - Joshua B. Jeyaretnam, the opposition politician whose outspokenness and persistence made him Singapore's leading dissident, died Tuesday of a heart attack, family members said.
At the age of 82, recently freed from bankruptcy, Jeyaretnam was preparing another run for Parliament, where he had broken the governing party's monopoly by winning the first opposition seat in 1981.
"We were trying to surmount the last hurdle," said a close friend and political partner, Ng Teck Siong, speaking of Jeyaretnam's attempt to enter Parliament once more. "But we were not able to do that. He had to leave us."

Singapore - The veteran Singapore opposition party leader and the Secretary-General of the Workers' Party Joshua Benjamin Jeyaratnam better known as JBJ passed away in Singapore on September 30th 2008. He was ailing briefly with the heart problem. The end came at Singapore Hospital after the failure of his heart. He was 82 when he passed away.

The death on Tuesday of J.B. Jeyaretnam has left Singapore devoid of one of its most prominent forces in the opposition.
Joshua Benjamin Jeyaretnam, who died of heart failure at age 82, had been planning a political comeback after years of fighting defamation lawsuits by senior government officials that left him bankrupt and hawking books of his speeches at street corners to help pay damages.
His treatment by the government after he broke the monopoly of the long-ruling People’s Action party in parliament in 1981 has since been repeated on other opposition politicians.
