SINGAPORE, Sept. 27_(Kyodo) _ Despite having one of the world's lowest fertility rates, Singapore's population jumped 5.5 percent within a year to hit 4.84 million in June this year mainly due to an influx of foreigners, a local daily reported Saturday.
The latest report on Singapore's population trends posted on the Department of Statistics' website showed that the number of Singapore citizens is just 3.2 million, or 1 percent higher than June last year.
The rest is made up of foreigners, including those who have taken up permanent residency and yet others staying temporarily for at least 12 months for work or study.
Singapore is aiming to achieve a total population of 6.5 million in 20 to 30 years mainly by attracting foreigners.
