The Korea Coast Guard held an annual meting with a delegation of Singaporean Police Coast Guard on Jeju Island on Tuesday (June 17).

After signing a memorandum of understanding in August 2004, the coast guard bodies from the two countries have held three annual meetings since 2006 in order to boost cooperation in preventing international crimes on East Asian oceans, curb smuggling and improve marine security.

For this year's meeting, the delegations from the two countries assessed the achievements of bilateral cooperation and exchange over the last four years and discussed ways to respond to international crimes, upgrade information exchange and cooperate in joint anti-piracy drills.

The two sides agreed to make efforts in conducting joint drills with Singapore's neighboring countries -- Malaysia, Indonesia -- while Singapore vowed to protect Korean ships on the Strait of Malacca where pirates often appear.

The two bodies also decided to create a working-level exchange network to provide important information from Singapore's Information Fusion Center for closer cooperation in technical and human exchanges and protection of lives.

The Information Fusion Center is Singapore's central information protection center that manages information of the Singaporean navy, port administration and the Police Coast Guard.
