The SGD500 million (US$353 million) upgrade of Changi’s Terminal 1 has just been awarded to the Japanese construction company Takenaka Corporation by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).

To begin in May this year and completed in 2011, the terminal upgrade is set to revamp the 27-year old building’s exterior facade, as well as interior experience.

“Many of us have fond memories of Terminal 1, which is synonymous with the birth of Changi Airport in 1981. It is timely for our grand old dame to get a refreshing makeover,” said Lim Kim Choon, CAAS Director-General and CEO.

“Terminal 1's upgrading is part of our infrastructure upgrade plans. With the recently renovated Terminal 2 and newly opened Terminal 3.”

Parts of the airport which will be upgraded include the Departure Kerbside, Departure Check-in Hall, Departure Transit Mall and Arrival Hall.

“Terminal 1's face lift will ensure that all passengers at Changi Airport can enjoy the same exciting, vibrant and enjoyable Changi Experience,” he adds.

Older sections of the finger piers will be expanded and seating in the gate hold-rooms enhanced. The food & beverage and retail spaces will also be expanded.

Changi Airport handled a record 36.7 million passengers in 2007.
