"Some who support alternative strategies of policing have been looking at the Singapore model. Singapore's low crime rate is attributed to its elaborate system of citizen surveillance, a strong police force, and a very punitive justice system. All Singaporeans have to be registered and fingerprinted and must also carry identification cards. There is also a dense network of citizen committees which monitor the movement of individuals. The Internal Security Act also gives police the authority to detain suspects without trial. Judges are also kept on a tight leash and some have been fired. Appeals to the Privy Council have also been discontinued."
