Singapore is gearing up for increased luxury tourism as it prepares to host its first Formula One race on 28 September, 2008.

In October 2007, Singapore saw UK visitor arrivals increase by 2% over October 2006. The average room rate for the same period was estimated at S$219 (£73), up 33.9%.

New developments this year include the giant observation wheel, Singapore Flyer, which opens in March (www.singaporeflyer.com).

The St. Regis Singapore opened in November last year with 299 guest rooms, including 30 suites. Facilities include restaurants and bars, a spa and an outdoor pool (www.starwoodhotels.com).

The boutique Amara Sanctuary Resort Sentosa, a £20m hill-top development, opened in late 2007 with 125 rooms (www.amarahotels.com), while the Boutique Hotel@Tiong Bahru opened with 288 themed rooms. The 769-room Fairmont Singapore opened last month with 17 restaurants (www. fairmont.com).

Over the next two years, about 1,000 rooms will be added to the hotel room inventory each year.

This will be followed by another 4,300 rooms when Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World at Sentosa open in 2010. www.visitsingapore.com
