Singapore To Increase Treated Water Supply

SINGAPORE, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Treated wastewater which is branded as NEWater in Singapore, will make up 30 per cent of water supply to the island republic by 2010, when an additional water treatment plant is constructed in Changi this year.

Singapore national water agency, PUB, Friday announced the award of contract for the building of the fifth and largest NEWater treatment plant to a local company, the Sembcorp Utilities (Sembcorp).

The plant will have a production capacity of 50 million gallons daily (mgd), PUB said in a statement here.

NEWater is one of Singapore's four diversified sources of water supply. The other three are water from local catchments, imported water from Johor and desalinated water.

PUB said the Changi NEWater Plant would have an initial capacity of 15mgd next year, and it would be ramped up to 50mgd by 2010.
