Experts from across Singapore's diverse medical community will be in Dubai next week in one of the largest ever healthcare knowledge exchange initiatives the Southeast Asian nation has ever conducted in the Middle East.
Specialists in fields ranging from oncology through to paediatrics and robotic surgery will be part of the delegation, and will meet with peers during the Arab Health Exhibition and Congress in Dubai.
Singapore has developed a strong reputation for developing innovative medical treatments and supporting a high standard of care, with the World Health Organisation ranking the country as having the best healthcare system in Asia and one of the best in the world, offering excellent healthcare outcomes for people while maintaining affordability.
Among the visiting physicians will be renowned specialists, Dr. Susan Lim of the Centre for Robotic Surgery, Assoc Prof Ivan Ng of National Neuroscience Institute and Dr Lee Kim Shang of Mount Elizabeth Oncology Centre.
They will be joined by specialists in hospital operations and management, medical database maintenance and healthcare marketing. In total, over 30 leading specialists from Singapore will be part of the larger delegation, forming one of the most comprehensive teams of Singaporean experts ever to visit the Middle East. There will in addition be a major trade pavilion at the Arab Health exhibition in Dubai.
"The broad range of experts emphasises the integrated nature of Singapore's healthcare system and offers the widest range of opportunities to exchange knowledge with our peers in the Middle East," said Dr Jason Yap, Director (Healthcare Services), Singapore Tourism Board.
Given the range of specialists involved, Singapore is confident they will be able to provide the most comprehensive showcase ever highlighting Singapore's medical strengths.
Presentations delivered at Arab Health will demonstrate how Singapore manages its efficient healthcare system, how the country's healthcare companies work with regional and international partners to provide a holistic approach to healthcare; and how cutting-edge IT applications and integrated solutions are optimizing Singapore's healthcare operations and providing better quality in healthcare delivery.
Ever since 2001 when the Nepalese twins who were joined at the head were successfully separated in a milestone operation that lasted nearly 90 hours, Singapore's doctors have been at the forefront of many new and innovative medical breakthroughs. Singapore has successfully taken major steps forward in stem cell technology, advanced neurosurgical imaging and computer-guided robotic technology.
The hospitals and specialty centres in Singapore provide an integrated focus in areas such as neurology, cardiology, ophthalmology and oncology.
For example, the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI), an international specialist centre for treatment, education, training and research into the neurosciences, provides unparalleled services to several leading hospitals in Singapore. In addition, doctors in Singapore have developed a technique to re-import white blood cells back into cancer sufferers' bodies. The innovative vaccine treatment, which is currently undergoing clinical trials, activates the patient's immune system to fight the cancer.
