Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei is in discussion with Singapore on possible initiatives to invigorate the sultanate's aquaculture sector and profit from products derived from the riches of its tropical rainforests.

The discussions are being held between officials of the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) and the Singapore Economic Development Board, which is known to have extensive experience in investment promotion, BEDB acting chairman Dato Timothy Ong told The Brunei Times.

"We want to have a collaboration with the Singapore Economic Development Board, we are next to Singapore, we have a good relationship with Singapore, (their development board) is one of the most successful investment promotion agencies in the world and therefore it is natural that we should benefit from them," said Dato Ong.

"We are talking with Singapore's economic board on a number of areas proposed to us through being in dialogue in areas such as aquaculture and how we can commercialise some products from our natural rainforest," he said. Singapore is developing its own biological sciences hub, he noted.

It has yet to be known what specific role the city-state will play in projects that will expedite commercial developments in the sultanate's aquaculture and forest resource industry.

BEDB's chief executive Vincent Cheong was formerly with the Singapore Economic Development Board from 1995 to 2002, holding various positions including head strategic planning.

BEDB functions as a first-stop agency to attract retain and add value to both local and foreign investments.

It also ensures Brunei is abreast with global developments and explores new business opportunities with growth potential. It develops action plans and business strategies to attract foreign direct investment. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
