The Vihari Poddar saga is taking an unexpected twist with officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) claiming that her husband and Siyaram Mills promoter Abhishek Poddar has been absconding.
DRI officials on their part claimed to have tried issuing summons to Abhishek, but without success. On Monday, DRI officials took the court's permission and went to Byculla Jail to take Vihari's statement.
Vihari has been languishing in jail since last Friday after trying to sneak in Rs 2.45 crore worth of gold and diamond jewellery into the country. Some of the items were allegedly carried by her in her underwear in an effort to avoid detection.
DRI officials said that in the last two years Vihari has made around 20 trips between Singapore and Mumbai. They suspect that in at least some of these trips she could have been used for smuggling jewellery. Full story
