OPINION: Will social media make the silent majority speak out?

Last Saturday, Singapore's Education Minister Heng Swee Keat announced a 26-member committee that will spearhead the conversation on Singapore's future and reach out to all Singaporeans, including the silent majority.
This geek was intrigued that the word "conversation" has been given such prominence of late, and can only reflect on the democratizing effect of social media which has resulted in more Singaporeans become vocal about our expectations for the country through online platforms Facebook and Twitter. Public communications in this social age has to be less broadcast-based and a lot more interactive, which some may argue will result in a more "populist" government who panders to the whims and fancies of its electorate.
