Singapore's defence expenditure has been on the steady upward climb, rising this year to a hefty $12.3 billion, constituting 3.6 per cent of this year's gross domestic product (GDP), and according to an AFP report, constitutes some 24.4 per cent of the government's total expenditure for 2012.
