Singapore’s Fertility Rate at a Historic Low Despite Opening the Floodgates To Immigrants

Although Singapore has opened the floodgates to immigrants of child-bearing age, the country’s total fertility rate has continued to sink to a historic low. With only 37,967 babies born at a total fertility rate of just 1.16 in 2010, Singapore has reached the lowest number of births since 2005.
In response to the declining fertility rate, the Singaporean government granted nearly 20,000 Singapore citizenships as well as 90,000 permanent residencies to foreigners in the hopes that this would boost the fertility rates. Full story
