Singapore To Raise Minimum Pay For Foreign White-Collar Labor

Nasdaq
SINGAPORE -(Dow Jones)- Singapore will raise the minimum salaries employers must pay to foreign white-collar and skilled technical workers, after recently announcing hikes in foreign-worker levies, as it seeks to stem inflows of overseas labor, a government minister said.
"Given the tight labour market for (professionals, managers, executives and technicians), salaries of local PMETs have moved up in recent years," Minister for Manpower Gan Kim Yong told lawmakers in parliament Wednesday. "We need to raise the qualifying salary thresholds for (foreign employment pass) applicants accordingly to keep pace with the local PMET labor market and to encourage companies to be more selective in hiring foreign talent who can contribute to our economy."
