SINGAPORE MUST GIVE ITS COMPETITION COMMISSION TEETH
THIS is valid for many Asian economies hidebound by cosy family networks, but it's rarely in sharper focus than in Singapore, where the government, usually in the form of state behemoth Temasek Holdings, owns half the economy - a stake many say hinders genuine entrepreneurism.
Take its mobile phone industry. Singapore's three operators all ultimately trace their ownership to Temasek. Singapore's Competition Commission, only founded in 2005, would much rather look at how the country's events ticketing agency, SISTIC, abused its monopoly. Last year it fined it almost $1 million.
