Singapore Airlines Fined for Price Fixing

On Thursday of last week, the antitrust regulator in South Korea said that they are imposing a fine of ₩120 billion ($97 million) on 19 airlines for unfair trading practices. However, they are only warning another 2 carriers to stop the unfair trade or they will take action. The 19 carriers that are being fined include Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, and Air France. The 2 airlines they are warning are Air India and Scandinavian Airlines System.
The Fair Trade Commission says that the carriers first tried to impose fuel surcharges through the International Air Transport Association in the late ’90s. However, they weren’t allowed to, so they resorted to unfair practices in order to impose and increase surcharges. Full Story
