Senior Scientists Enjoy New Latitude at Singapore Earth-Science Center

Three years ago, Kerry Sieh was living what many would consider an enviable academic life as a tenured geology professor with an endowed chair at the California Institute of Technology.
But Mr. Sieh, an earthquake expert, decided to shake up his comfortable situation when the Singapore government made him an offer he couldn't turn down. He left Caltech and tenure to become the director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore, where he is building a department of researchers from scratch armed with more than $100-million in government support.
