ST Engineering's VT Halter fined US$1.3 million for tugboat explosion

Shipbuilder VT Halter Marine has been fined $1.3 million by the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration following an investigation into last year's deadly explosion aboard a tugboat.
The Nov. 20 explosion killed two subcontractors and injured two others at the company's Trinity Drive shipyard in Escatawpa.
"This was a horrific and preventable situation," Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis said. "The employer was aware of the hazards and knowingly and willfully sent workers into a confined space with an explosive and toxic atmosphere."
VT Halter Marine is owned by Singapore Technologies Engineering. Singapore's government, through Temasek Holdings, owns about half of ST Engineering. Full Story
