TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Singapore High Court ruled that Taiwan could demand the return of US$29.8 million (NT$939 million) from a diplomatic broker who promised he could move Papua New Guinea into switching relations, reports said Monday.
Former Foreign Minister James Huang paid the sum to Charles Ching and Wu Shih-tsai in 2006 in the hope that the duo could influence Papua New Guinea to cut its ties to Beijing and recognize Taiwan instead. The switch never occurred and the money disappeared. Huang resigned after the case came to light during the final days of the administration of President Chen Shui-bian in 2008. Full Story
