Thousands of people went to the Hong Lim Park in Singapore last Mother's Day (9 May) to support a petition against a proposal to reduce the weighting of Mother Tongue in the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). Someone wrote: History (if we still have historical memory) will forever record this scene: We are here for our Mother Tongue. There is a sad memory hidden in this place which is full of unpredictable political changes.
On that day, after the proposal has triggered strong reactions from the public, Education Minister Ng Eng Hen held a rare meeting with the petition's organisers. He also said that the government has no intention of reducing the importance of the Mother Tongue in the PSLE. Full Story
